Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (preferably lean)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce (low sodium preferred)
  • 2 tbsp sesame oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tbsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/2 tbsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional, adjust to taste)
  • 1 bunch green onions, chopped (reserve some for garnish)
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish
  • Cooked white rice, for serving
  • Optional vegetables: sliced carrots, diced bell peppers, or steamed broccoli

Instructions

  • Prepare all ingredients as listed. Cook rice according to package instructions or use pre-cooked rice.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat.

Make the Sauce:

  • In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium. Add the brown sugar, soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes. Stir well to combine with the beef. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until the sauce has thickened slightly.

Combine and Serve:

  • Add the green onions to the skillet, reserving some for garnish. Stir everything together until the onions are just wilted.
  • Serve the beef over cooked rice, garnished with remaining green onions and sesame seeds.

Optional Vegetables:

  • If using additional vegetables, either stir-fry them in the skillet before adding the beef or steam them separately and serve alongside or mixed into the beef bowl.
